The FBI said I was my parents' stolen baby - but I found the truth

The FBI said I was my parents' stolen baby - but I found the truth

When a one-day-old baby, Paul Joseph Fronczak, was stolen from a Chicago hospital in 1964, the terrible story made headlines across America. Then, two years later, an abandoned boy was identified as the missing baby and handed over to the relieved parents. Years later, Paul began to investigate what had happened - and was shocked by what he found.
Paul Fronczak was 10 when he went hunting for Christmas presents in his parents' basement. He pushed aside a sofa to get into the crawl space. There, he discovered three mysterious boxes full of letters, sympathy cards and newspaper clippings. One headline read: "200 search for stolen baby." Another: "Mother asks kidnapper to return baby." He recognised his parents in the pictures, looking distraught and much younger. Then he read that their baby son, Paul Joseph, had been kidnapped.
"Wow, that's me!" he thought.
Newspaper clipping
It was a sensational tale. On 26 April 1964 his mother, Dora Fronczak, had given birth to a baby boy in the Michael Reese hospital in Chicago. She had nursed the baby throughout the day - when he wasn't sleeping with other babies in the nursery. But the following morning a woman dressed as a nurse came into Dora's room and took him to be examined by a doctor. She never returned.
Hospital staff realised something had gone wrong, and a frantic search was soon under way. However, the hospital didn't notify the authorities - or the baby's parents - until that afternoon. At 3pm they called the father, Chester Fronczak, at the factory where he worked as a machinist.
"My dad had to leave work, go to the hospital and tell his wife that the baby was missing," says Paul. "You think you're safe - you're in a hospital - and that's where your baby is kidnapped."
The biggest manhunt in Chicago's history was then launched, involving 175,000 postal workers, 200 police officers and the FBI. They had searched 600 homes by midnight, but to no avail

Then, in March 1966, nearly two years later, Dora and Chester received a letter from the FBI - a toddler had been found in Newark, New Jersey, who matched their son's description.
The boy had been abandoned in a pushchair in a busy shopping centre the previous July and had been placed with a foster family, the Eckerts. They had baptised him Scott McKinley and were so fond of him they were considering adopting him.
Before they could, however, a New Jersey police detective had the idea that the boy might be the missing baby from Chicago.

XXXTentacion, controversial rapper, shot dead in Florida aged 20

US rapper XXXTentacion, who quickly rose to fame with two consecutive hit albums, has been killed aged 20.
He was leaving a motorcycle dealership in south Florida on Monday when an armed suspect shot him.
Police in Broward County said XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He was often described as one of rap's most controversial artists and was facing domestic violence charges.
The polarising rapper, who first found an audience by uploading songs to the website SoundCloud, had been hailed as a breakthrough talent and tributes have been pouring in from hip-hop luminaries in the wake of his death.
The county sheriff's office said that Onfroy was leaving the dealership shortly before 16:00 local time when two armed suspects approached.
  • The volatile life and compelling sound of XXXTentacion
At least one of them shot him before both fled the scene in Deerfield Beach, which is 43 miles (69km) north of Miami, in a dark-coloured SUV.
Investigators said it appeared to be a "possible robbery". Video posted to social media appeared to show Onfroy slumped in his car.

A witness told celebrity news website TMZ that multiple shots rang out outside the dealership.
The rapper, whose hit songs include SAD! and Moonlight, quickly rose to prominence following the release of his debut album 17 last August.
His follow-up ? debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in March and has been listened to hundreds of millions of time online.
  • Do rap videos glamorise violence?
  • America's gun culture in 10 charts
The album tackled subjects such as depression and was praised by some of rap's most high-profile stars.
But his short career was plagued by allegations of domestic violence. He was facing 15 felony charges at the time of his death, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.

From tough upbringing to number one

By Mark Savage, Music Reporter, BBC News
XXXTentacion had a troubled upbringing and was expelled from middle school for fighting, but he channelled his energy and fury into music.
He quickly became the most popular artist in the genre known as SoundCloud Rap, defined by its languid, hazy beats and wide-ranging influences.
His surging popularity was noted by the music industry and, by October 2017, he had scored a distribution agreement reportedly worth $6 million (£4.5m).
But the teenager's career was already being overshadowed by his legal problems. Fans were apparently unswayed, sending his latest album to number one in the US.

McDonald's to ditch plastic straws

McDonald's to ditch plastic straws

McDonald's will replace plastic straws with paper ones in all its UK and Ireland restaurants, starting from September.
The fast food giant is the latest company to opt out of the single-use plastic, which can take hundreds of years to decompose if not recycled.
The restaurant chain uses 1.8 million straws a day in the UK.
"Reflecting the broader public debate, our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws," the firm said.
This decision follows a successful trial in selected restaurants earlier this year. The move to paper straws will begin in September and be completed next year.
  • The last (plastic) straw: Who's banning them?
  • Reality Check: Do we use 8.5 billion straws a year in the UK?
  • Plastic straw and cotton bud ban proposed
Environment Secretary Michael Gove called it a "significant contribution" to helping the environment, adding that it was "a fine example to other large businesses".

In April, the government proposed a ban on plastic straws and cotton buds in England. But many businesses, including Waitrose, Costa Coffee, and Wagamama, have already started to take action.

All JD Wetherspoon pubs stopped using plastic straws at the beginning of the year. Pizza Express said it would replace all plastic straws with biodegradable ones by summer 2018.
And more than 60 independent British festivals - including Boardmasters and Bestival - have banned plastic straws as part of a pledge to rid their sites of single-use plastic by 2021.
  • platic pollution: 'Scourge' of debris on beaches tackled
  • Disabled people 'need plastic straws'
  • Plastic and cotton found in UK's wild mussels
Most straws are made from plastics such as polypropylene and polystyrene, which unless recycled take hundreds of years to decompose.
Many end up in landfill and the oceans, and the BBC's Blue Planet II highlighted the damage plastic can cause to marine wildlife.
But not everyone thinks total bans are the answer.

Job cuts 'beneficial for Rolls Royce'

Job cuts 'beneficial for Rolls Royce'

Yesterday Rolls Royce said it would lay off 4,600 workers, many in its home town of Derby.
Andrew Mair of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance says many of the jobs to go are in middle management and removing some "layers of bureaucracy" will be beneficial.
"These cuts are about making Rolls Royce a more agile company... and therefore a more efficient company in the global economy."
He doesn't fear a wider knock-on effect on the wider Midlands region, whose economy is growing.
He adds that business at Rolls Royce is growing, making factory floor job losses unlikely.

    Federal Reserve raises interest rates

    June 13, 2018 1 Comments

    Federal Reserve raises interest rates

The US Federal Reserve has voted to raise the target for its benchmark interest rate by 0.25%, citing solid economic expansion and job gains.
The widely-anticipated decision will lift the target for the central bank's benchmark rate to 1.75%-2%, the highest level since 2008.
A majority of Fed officials also forecast two more rate rises this year, one more than previously predicted.
The rise is part of the US recovery following the global financial crisis.
It is the seventh time the bank has raised rates since 2015.
The tighter policy reflects expectations that US growth and inflation will prove stronger than officials anticipated in March, while the unemployment rate continues to fall.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome "Jay" Powell said job gains are boosting income and confidence, while foreign expansion and tax cuts support additional growth.
"The main takeaway is that the economy is doing well," he said.
    • Why US rates have a global impact
Projections released after the Fed's two-day meeting in Washington show policymakers expect the US economy will grow 2.8% this year, while unemployment falls to 3.6%.
They expect the core inflation rate to rise to roughly 2% this year.
Mr Powell said concerns about trade are rising and the bank has received anecdotal reports that the uncertainties are leading companies to hold off on investment and hiring.
But, he added, "We really don't see it in the numbers."

Analysis: BBC economics correspondent Andrew Walker
This is another step on the road back to normal after the emergency measures taken following the financial crisis of 2008.
The US has gone further down this path than the other largest developed economies. The central banks in Japan and the Eurozone still have their main rates at or close to zero. Both are still actively undertaking quantitative easing, a policy of creating new money to buy financial assets in an effort to boost economic activity.
The Fed stopped that in 2014 and has made a start on reducing its holdings of trillions of dollars' worth of assets. That reflects the fact that the US recovery after the crisis has been stronger, and inflation is getting closer to the Fed's target.
All three central banks (and the Bank of England) aim for inflation of about 2%, but in Japan and the Eurozone prices are rising substantially more slowly. In the UK, the Bank has stopped actively buying financial assets and interest rates are up a little from their lows.
The British position has however been complicated by the referendum on membership of the European Union and a spike in inflation that followed the decline in the pound after the vote.

    Declaring victory?

The decision to raise rates comes as the US unemployment rate hovers at 3.8% - the lowest rate in nearly two decades - and inflation, which lagged the Fed's 2% target for years, shows signs of starting to pick up.
The bank's preferred indicator of inflation, consumer spending figures, showed annual inflation rose 2% in April or 1.8% if energy and food were excluded.
Mr Powell called the figures "encouraging" but said the bank wants to see the economy sustain that rate of inflation before it declares victory.
Overall, he noted, the economy is in a much improved position than it was just a few years ago, as the US slowly emerged from the financial crisis and recession.
"The decision you see today is another sign that the US economy is in great shape," he said, adding that the bank continues to favour a gradual approach to raising rates.

    Consumer impact

The higher rates should be a boon for savers, but they will increase borrowing costs for households and businesses throughout the economy.
Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for the interest rate website Bankrate.com, said that could "squeeze" families if wage growth remains sluggish.
Analysts say the higher rates have also contributed to turmoil in some emerging markets. Low rates had prompted investors to pour money into riskier overseas markets in recent years in search of returns.

'Were kind of just using Luna's old things,' Teigen said. 'It will be fine.'
They're constantly in awe of their two-year-old daughter Luna, with John admitting that 'her carrying multiple purses is pretty cute.'
The couple also said that while their little girl is gearing up to become a big sister, she still has 'zero clue' about what's involved.
'She knows just as much as she knew eight months ago, which is nothing,' Teigen said. 'So it's going to be a surprise.'
'She knows to call it a 'baby,' but I don't know if she [can] clarify what that really means to her yet,' Legend added.

Victoria Beckham and Shaq Hung Out in Los Angeles to Celebrate Reebok Collaboration

The designer didn't share many details about her upcoming line, except that it includes at least one pair of unisex sneakers.

In the spirit of Coachella, Victoria Beckham spent a West Hollywood Thursday evening hanging out on Shaquille O'Neal's shoulders, doing a slam dunk as the California sun set.
This is not a metaphor. In a hypothetical pop culture trivia, the only correlation between Beckham and Reebok — or Beckham and O'Neal, if you really had to think — is their popularity in the '90s. Back then, Beckham was known primarily as Posh Spice; O'Neal was an all-star Los Angeles Laker; and Reebok was, as is still is, a sneaker maker sitting at the intersection of pro sports, fashion and culture. The unlikely pair (and recent collaborators) met in person for the first time to celebrate at a Reebok event celebrating Beckham joining the Reebok family, one Shaq has been a loyal member of for over twenty years.
The former Spice Girl and current fashion mogul is known for her classically feminine looks with a slight edge — think leather pants and towering heels — as well as her tiny, waif-like frame. She has partnered with the Reebok team to debut a line of athletic wear with an emphasis on technicality; the designer repeated the phrase "technical workout clothing" several times as she drove home her focus on simple, flattering silhouettes, nothing too complicated, and high performance fabrics and cuts. A true athlete's workout look, not a Fairfax sweatsuit to stunt on the 'Gram in.
    Photo: Reebok

We still don't know much about the line, due to release sometime towards the end of 2018, except that it includes at least one pair of unisex sneakers, or "trainers," as Victoria still calls them. Joined by longtime Reebok ambassador Shaq, the '90s icons riffed on their favorite era and how it inspired a small capsule of merch, which includes a T-shirt with Shaq's silhouette and comes in black and white. Beckham reminisced about Fashion Week and her affinity for the perfect white T-shirt — so much so that she has to make her own.
Reminding us several times that she works out every day (we get it Posh, we can tell), Beckham didn't appear to intend for her line to be all about street style, but she isn't here to judge. In fact, she made it a point to mention that all of the pieces in her collaboration are unisex.
When asked about a '90s trend she'd never revisit, she had plenty list, ranging from acid wash jeans to shell suits to over-plucked eyebrows, which feel miles away compared to the constantly resurfacing spaghetti straps, sneakers and "Clueless"-inspired looks. Maybe even a hint of "Spice World," if you will.
"Even the bad stuff makes you smile, it takes you back to a time when music was good, everything was good, that's why I'm so excited to work with Reebok," Beckham said. On the other hand, Shaq was busy paying tribute to '90s legends like Boy George and other "white boy classics" like "The Lost Boys."
In our world of Instagram endorsements, it's refreshing to see two OGs together — even if all there is to show for it (for now) is a well-fitting T-shirt and a promise of upcoming sneakers.

She would be injured, but she does have superpowered healing abilities
During the first battle scene on Themyscira, Diana does sustain an injury/flesh wound on her left arm which the movie seems to imply was a deflected bullet.
This happens when Antiope sacrifices herself for Diana (probably deflecting the trajectory of the bullet to save her)
This implies that the DCEU version of Wonder Woman, at least at this point in her timeline, can have her skin broken by bullets or kinds of trajectories (like shrapnel).
Later on, though, the healer removes her bandages and sees her skin has healed fully, surprising her

Depends, in some stories she’s bullet proof, like in Injustice
    In some she’s not
Though that one above is a little more complicated than her just being shot by a bullet.
Then there’s always the strange times in comics like that time she got shot in the rear
To put it simply, it’s inconsistent. She’s durable but has usually shown vulnerability to piercing objects.

For a long time, bullets and arrows could harm her by penetrating her skin because the force of the bullet (or arrow) was concentrated in a very small area. (I suspect it was also because if bullets didn’t hurt her she would have know reason do to her bullets and bracelet thing).
It may turn out that she has more vulnerability to bullets than she thinks and just hasn't been hit in a while. That would make sense… in this day and age, WW should be able to handle a bullet, especially considering everything else she can handle.

I am not a long-time follower of the Wonder Woman character but it is my understanding of her bracelets that they not only deflect bullets but absorb some of the energy which she can tap into later.
Examples: on Thymiscira while sparring she absorbs many sword strikes and when she crosses the bracelets they emit a powerful shock wave.
In the final battle Ares brings down lightning which Diana absorbs into the bracelets and then redirects at Ares, killing him.
As far as being wounded, of course. If she could not be wounded like the other gods how could they be killed? But unlike those other gods Diana has the advantage of invincible plot armor.
